It is essential the school libraries have the appropriate documentation. This documentation would include the Library Rules and Regulations that give clear statements of the responsibilities for anyone who uses the library (MacDonnell, 2004).
The Windsor Forrest media center supports the proper use of intellectual property rights and creative commons as stated by the American Library Association. The school has a copy of the rules located inside of their handbook so that faculty, staff, and students all have access to it at all times. The Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA) passed in 1999, requires schools qualifying for federal E-rate funding to use filtering technology to block access to materials that are obscene, child pornography, or harmful to minors. When it comes to ethical use, the school expects for all students to adhere to the Acceptable Use Policy, listed in the student code of conduct given to the students at the beginning of the school year.
This policy requires the individual to ensure that all uses of technology will be safe, legal, and for educational purpose. The consequences of not adhering to the rules may include the revoking of privileges, expulsion, and/or restitution for any damages caused.
Windsor Forrest also follows the American Library Association’s in regards to intellectual freedoms. Along with having a commitment to learning, they also have a commitment to free thinking. They are devoted to not removing any information or resources because of personal views or doctoring, and are responsible for challenging any censorship of housed material that provide information. According to Board Policy IFBD, “the SCCPSS Board of Education and its employees will endorse freedom of speech and freedom of the press for the entire learning community as stated in the Constitution of the United States.” Specific procedures to address any challenges to media center materials are included in IFBD. The following forms should be used in this process.
In regards to privacy, Windsor Forrest does not grant any privacy to individuals using their equipment. The school makes it clear that the school reserves the right to record, monitor, review, and report all activities. Along with this, all material collected can also be sent to authorities or any other third party member.
