Teaching for Learning
It is the job of the media specialist to provide instruction to both students and teachers and often to administrators. During the past six years that I have worked in a high school center, first as a library media clerk, then as the library media support specialist, and now as the media specialist, I have trained almost as many teachers in technology resources as I have students. I realize that as new technology emerges, it is essential to train both teachers and students in the utilization of the latest technology resources, as well as trending software.
To demonstrate this teaching role, I created a lesson plan to instruct teachers in ways to integrate technology into their lessons by using Google apps in their classroom. I taught them to establish a Google account to gain an understanding of Google docs and Google sheets. Many of our teachers are uncomfortable using Google apps, but we have five Chromecarts with 36 Chromebooks in each cart, so it is important that teachers know how to use the apps in order to gain the full benefits of using Chromebooks with their instruction.
In FRIT 7234, I created mini lessons to teach students to use media ethically, to find sources for information, and to be safe on the Internet. Since there is a vast amount of information present on the Internet, it is vital for students to know how to locate valid resources for their research projects and how to use this information ethically without infringing on copyright laws. Students must also learn about safety while using the Internet and have an awareness of the dangers that can be lurking online.
