The primary source of funds comes from the money set aside by our school principal for the library as part of the school’s annual budget. Based on the FTE count (student enrollment), our principal is given an amount of funds. The media specialist is invited to give a proposed budget outlining funds needed, but that does not mean the media specialist will receive this amount. The principal will decide the amount the library will receive. There are other means of funding available though. One common source of funds comes from book fairs. A goal is set for the school. If a school meets or exceeds that goal, the media specialist receives money to be used for the media center. This is one reason media specialists advertise and promote the book fair. Grants are also another means of funding. Grants, however, are not guaranteed since other media specialists are often competing for the same grants.
